Andrew Barclay
No.3 “Brian Harrison”
Overhaul

The Association’s steam locomotive “Brian Harrison” No.3 has been withdrawn from traffic to begin its 10-year overhaul following the expiration of its boiler certificate. This is the first steam locomotive which was restored and operated by the Association.

Its brother locomotive "Henry Ellison" is currently the only steam locomotive which is operational that is looked after by the Association which performs brake van rides and driver experiences on the Ravenstor incline at weekends.

The Association would like to return this reliable locomotive to service as soon as possible.

Since 2000, the development of the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway has relied on a collection of portacabins, containers and railway coaches to house an interpretative display and museum, an interactive model railway exhibit, information displays, toilets, shop and catering.

All of these structures are deteriorating, most are not easily accessible, the facilities are inadequate for the increasing numbers of visitors and our archives and displays are at risk in the coach where they are housed.

In early 2017, the Association paid for the removal of the dust dock, leaving a large flat area, which would be ideal for a new station building, adjacent to Platform 1.

The project has two main aims, relating to our charitable objectives of conserving and displaying our heritage collection of railway items, plus providing a better and more enjoyable experience for visitors.

As a secondary goal, the building will concentrate eight different facilities under one roof, enabling all of them to be upgraded to provide a much better experience for visitors and better working conditions for volunteers.

  • Ladies, Gents and Disabled toilet facilities

  • An open space to include a museum, book shop, information centre and model railway layout
